- Dissolved organic matter (DOM) leaching from thawing permafrost may have feedback effects on climate if it is efficiently mineralized into greenhouse gases (GHG). Yet, many uncertainties remain on the extent of this mineralization, which depends on DOM lability that is variable across landscapes and seasons. This archive contains data from an 18-day experiment investigating DOM photodegradation and biodegradation in water originating from a thermokarst lake in a subarctic peatland in the region of Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik, Nunavik, Quebec, Canada. Thermokarst peatlands are organic-rich systems where some of the largest GHG emission rates have been measured. The originality of this project is that this water was collected during late winter to evaluate its reactivity potential during the overlooked ice-off spring period, when DOM becomes exposed to sunlight, after six months of darkness. We incubated the water in triplicate bottles under five treatments, on the lab rooftop in Quebec City. In four treatments, the "bacteria" and "light" conditions were applied concurrently: BL - 1.5 µm filtration to keep the full bacterial community, then exposed to sunlight, B - 1.5 µm filtration but incubated in the dark, L - 0.2 µm filtration to filter bacteria out, and then exposed to sunlight, C - 0.2-µm filtrated and dark-incubated control treatment. The fifth treatment, PI, was applied in a consecutive manner: a portion of the 0.2 µm-filtered water was pre-incubated under natural sunlight for two days, and then inoculated with bacteria for an incubation in the dark. At T0 and days 3, 8, 13 and 18, DOM was characterized using absorption indices (the absorption coefficient at 320 nm, the specific absorbance index at 254 nm and the absorption slope at 285 nm) along with five PARAFAC-extracted fluorescence components. Dissolved organic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon (proxy for CO2 production), total bacterial abundance and bacterial production rate were also measured. Experimental metadata also included in this archive are the following: dark and sunlight incubation temperature, along with incoming solar radiation at Quebec City during the incubation period (as Lux and W m^-2). La matière organique dissoute (MOD) issue du pergélisol en dégel pourrait favoriser une boucle de rétroaction positive sur le climat si elle est efficacement minéralisée en gaz à effet de serre (GES). Il y a de nombreuses incertitudes relatives à l'étendue de cette minéralisation dépendant, entre autre, de la labilité de cette MOD, qui est de toute évidence assez variable selon le type de paysage et les saison. Cette archive présente les données d'une expérience de 18 jours examinant la photodegradation et la biodégradation de la MOD provenant d'un lac thermokarstique situé sur une zone de tourbière dans la région subarctique de Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik, Nunavik, Québec, Canada. Les tourbières thermokarstiques sont des systèmes riches en matière organique, où les taux d'émission de GES sont parmi les plus forts du monde. L'originalité de ce projet tient dans le fait que l'eau expérimentale ait été collectée à la fin de l'hiver. Le but est d'explorer son potentiel de réactivité au cours du printemps, une saison négligée par les études, durant laquelle la MOD est exposée au soleil, après la fonte des glaces et six mois d'opacité. Nous avons incubé cette eau dans des trios de bouteilles et sous cinq traitements, sur le toit du laboratoire, à Québec. Dans quatre traitements, les conditions "lumière" et "bactéries" ont été appliquées simultanément: BL - filtration sur 1,5 µm pour conserver la totalité de la communauté bactérienne et exposition au soleil, B - filtration sur 1,5 µm et incubé au noir, L - filtration sur 0,2 µm pour exclure la communauté bactérienne et exposition au soleil, C - traitement contrôle filtré sur 0,2 µm et incubé au noir. Dans le cas du cinquième traitement, PI, les conditions ont été appliquées de façon consécutive: une portion d'eau filtrée sur 0,2 µm a été pré-incubée au soleil pendant deux jours, puis inoculée avec des bactéries et incubée au noir. La MOD a été caractérisée à T0, ainsi qu'à 3, 8, 13 et 18 jours, en utilisant des indices d'absorption courants, comme le coefficient d'absorption à 320 nm, l'indice d'absorbance spécifique à 254 nm et la pente d'absorption à 285 nm, mais aussi cinq composantes de fluorescence extraites par PARAFAC. Le carbone organique dissous, le carbone inorganique dissous (variable d'estimation du CO2 produit), l'abondance bactérienne totale et le taux de la production bactérienne ont également été mesurés. Les métadonnées expérimentales incluses dans cette archive sont les suivantes: la température d'incubation au noir et au soleil, ainsi que l'éclairement reçu à Québec pendant la période d'incubation (en Lux et en W m^-2). L'éclairement reçu à la latitude du site d'étude en 2015-2016 à Whapmagoostui-kuujjuarapik est déjà disponible dans l'archive D4 de NordicanaD, DOI : 10.5885/45057SL-EADE4434146946A7.
