Description:
Shapefile created from Environment Canada's weather station data. Data includes start and end dates for weather stations in Canada, weather station identification numbers, location and collection frequency (monthly, daily, hourly) with start and completion dates.

Process:

Shapefile process steps (15 April 2016)

  1. Downloaded Station Inventory EN.csv file from ftp://ftp.tor.ec.gc.ca/Pub/Get_More_Data_Plus_de_donnees/
  2. Imported CSV data into QGIS to create a point shapefile, using WGS 84 datum
  3. Data examined visually - six points from the CSV file appeared far outside the boundaries of Canada.
    • The records were examined to determine the nature of the anomalies.
    • One of the records was missing a minus sign in the coordinates; this error was corrected
    • 5 records were missing coordinates entirely
  4. The five records with missing coordinates were deleted from the data set.
  5. Shapefile reprojected into NAD83/Statistics Canada Lambert
