- Geospatial dataset of abandoned oil and gas well locations, plugging statuses, and well/fluid types compiled from United States open-access state databases.
Notes: Abandoned well data contained in these files was compiled from open source state/territorial repositories in 2019/2020, and reflects the degree of data availability at the time they were downloaded. Well types and plugging statuses were assigned to abandoned wells based on the available data in the original state database and may not be consistent throughout different states. Spatial coordinates may also not accurately reflect the true location of the abandoned well. The primary goal of the attached database was to provide a rough first estimate of total number and locations of abandoned oil/gas wells in the United States, and does not accurately represent well counts presented in the associated research article. No abandoned well coordinates were available for Iowa due to limited data availability. No state representatives were contacted throughout this process for confirmation of the the well statuses and well type categories. - Williams, James P.and Kang, Mary
