York Regional Police is committed to keeping York Region one of the safest places to live in Canada. The goal of this interactive tool is to improve community awareness of Police activity and engage Citizens in crime prevention strategies so that we can work in partnership to build safer communities. We want to ensure the Public Facing Community Safety Data Portal is Transparent and ensuring all aspects of Community Engagement are accessible.
Information viewed within this map should not be used to make decisions or comparisons regarding the safety or crime levels for a specific area. The system is designed to provide citizens with an overview of Police activity only; for more detailed statistics regarding confirmed crimes, please refer to our annual Statistical Reports.
The data represented on the Community Safety Portal includes, but is not limited to, proactive Policing efforts, and Police occurrences of a variety of groupings. However, due to the need to protect certain types of sensitive Police information, some reports may be excluded as we omit any sensitive information. Our Data Doesn’t Include Unfounded Reports and they are excluded in our Crime Counts as they are technically not Crimes.
When using this tool, the following factors should be considered:
- Data is refreshed every day at approximately 3AM and dates back to 2016
- This Community Safety Portal displays a selected list of occurrence types
- The date displayed on the map tips/popups are based on occurrence date of the event
- The occurrences had to have taken place within York Region’s nine Municipalities and reported to York Regional Police. Occurrences on Provincial Roads are reported to the Ontario Provincial Police and will not appear on the Community Safety Portal
- All data included in the Community Safety Portal are subject to change for a variety of reasons
- In order to protect privacy, no personal or identifying information is included. To anonymize the location of the incident the point on the map will be relocated to the closest intersection to where they occurred and should be considered approximate; any attempts to derive a specific address are strictly prohibited. Highly-populated areas or areas with a high-volume of foot traffic (i.e. shopping areas, entertainment facilities, schools, parks, main roads, densely populated communities etc.) may have more reported incidents. This does not necessarily mean that there is a disproportionate amount of crime in these areas.
