Atlantic Canada Newspaper Survey - Dataset

This newspaper research database has as its focus nine broad categories of commodities based upon Statistics Canada’s “Trade of Canada Commodity Classification”. In the 1980s work on the database was supported by the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The project received SSHRC funding in 1986-1987 as part of its Research Tools Program. In June 2013, the Canadian Heritage Information Network was no longer able to host the database due to accessibility issues. CHIN exported the dataset and provided a copy to UPEI in the hopes that it would be useful.

Abundance of Benthic Macrofauna on the Coast of Placentia Bay (2019-2020)

4D Oceans Lab; Memorial University of Newfoundland — 2019-07-10 The identity and abundance of individual benthic macrofauna (individual > 2 cm) were quantified across six survey areas located along the coast of Placentia Bay, a southern embayment of the Island of Newfoundland. From early 2019 to mid 2020, surveys were conducted at point-wise locations using a drop-camera to observe the seafloor. In total, 282 drop-camera transects were obtained, each consisting of 2 continuous minutes of video set roughly 1 - 2 meters above the seafloor. L'identité et l'abondance de la macrofaune benthique individuelle (individu > 2 cm) ont été observées dans six zones de relevé situées le long de la côte de la baie de Placentia, une baie située au sud de l'île de Terre-Neuve. De début 2019 à mi-2020, des enquêtes ont été menées à des endroits ponctuels à l'aide d'une caméra de recul pour observer le fond marin. Au total, 282 transects de caméra de recul ont été obtenus, chacun consistant en 2 minutes consécutives de tournage vidéo à environ 1 à 2 mètres au-dessus du fond marin. Long-term Monitoring of Shoreline Debris in the Placentia Bay Area, Newfoundland (2018-2020)

Memorial University of Newfoundland; Melvin, Jessica — 2022-08-11 This data was collected between 2018 and 2020 at 8 sample sites around Placentia Bay and consists of two data types: (1) Shoreline surface debris (SSD), and (2) Shoreline buried debris (SBD). With the exception of two sample sites, which were only visited once, in the first year of monitoring, frequency of sampling varied between daily, monthly or seasonally depending on the sample site, and was reduced to half-effort sampling in year 2. In an effort to understand the importance of shoreline substrate and environmental factors at play on rocky shorelines, sediment type, stranded seaweed (wrack) cover, and the presence of snow and ice were recorded and carefully monitored in both datasets. SSD surveys identified debris visible on the shoreline surface from standing height, down to a lower size limit of 2cm. SBD surveys employed sample quadrats to remove sediment and wrack samples from the shoreline, down to a depth of ~5cm. Marine debris down to a lower size limit of 1mm was extracted from these samples using a combination of visual separation and seawater floatation protocols. For SSD data, debris abundance, density, and source category information were recorded. For SBD data, debris abundance, density, source category, size, and colour information were recorded. This project is part of Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Coastal Environmental Baseline Program. Ces données ont été recueillies entre 2018 et 2020 sur 8 sites d'échantillonnage autour de la baie de Placentia et se composent de deux types de données : (1) débris de surface du littoral (SSD) et (2) débris enfouis sur le rivage (SBD). À l'exception de deux sites d'échantillonnage, qui n'ont été visités qu'une seule fois, au cours de la première année de surveillance, la fréquence d'échantillonnage variait entre quotidienne, mensuelle ou saisonnière selon le site d'échantillonnage, et a été réduite à un échantillonnage demi-effort la deuxième année. Dans un effort pour comprendre l'importance du substrat du rivage et des facteurs environnementaux en jeu sur les rivages rocheux, le type de sédiment, la couverture d'algues échouées (fucus) et la présence de neige et de glace ont été enregistrés et surveillés attentivement dans les deux ensembles de données. Les relevés SSD ont identifié des débris visibles sur la surface du rivage à partir de la hauteur debout, jusqu'à une limite de taille inférieure de 2 cm. Les levés SBD ont utilisé des quadrats d'échantillons pour prélever des échantillons de sédiments et de fucus du rivage, jusqu'à une profondeur d'environ 5 cm. Les débris marins jusqu'à une limite de taille inférieure de 1 mm ont été extraits de ces échantillons en utilisant une combinaison de protocoles de séparation visuelle et de flottaison de l'eau de mer. Pour les données SSD, l'abondance des débris, la densité et les informations sur la catégorie de source ont été enregistrées. Utilizing Benthic Video Footage for Detecting Large Debris on the Seafloor in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland (2019)

Memorial University of Newfoundland; Jessica Melvin; Charles Mather — 2019-07-10 This data was collected in 2019 at three locations in Placentia Bay by another research group at Memorial University, as a part of the Coastal Environmental Baseline Program Initiative under the Oceans Protection Plan of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). Video footage from drop cameras used for ground truthing was shared with the Placentia Bay Ocean Debris Survey for the purpose of analyzing for macro-debris present on the seafloor. Average field of view (FOV) was estimated for each individual video and GPS coordinates were used to estimate video transect lengths in order to determine debris density. When identified, debris was categorized according to its size, material, source category, and interaction with surround environment. Ces données ont été recueillies en 2019 à trois endroits dans la baie de Placentia par un autre groupe de recherche de l’Université Mémorial, dans le cadre de l'initiative du Programme sur les données environnementales côtières de référence de Pêches et Océan Canada (MPO). Des séquences vidéo des caméras de largage utilisées pour la vérification au sol ont été partagées avec le *Placentia Bay Ocean Debris Survey* (PODS) dans le but d'analyser les macro-débris présents sur le fond marin. Le champ de vision moyen (FOV) a été estimé pour chaque vidéo individuelle et les coordonnées GPS ont été utilisées pour estimer la longueur des transects vidéo afin de déterminer la densité des débris. Microplastics in surface water samples from Placentia Bay, Newfoundland (2018-2019)

Two of these sites were subject to repeat sampling. Surface water samples were collected in collaboration with local fish harvesters, who aided the team in towing a surface trawl (the Low-Tech Aquatic Debris Instrument, or LADI, a DIY citizen-science technology developed by the Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research) equipped with a plankton net for the filtering of surface waters for microplastics. Microplastic samples were analysed visually under a stereomicroscope for the identification and characterization of microplastics down to a lower size limit of 1mm. This project is part of Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Coastal Environmental Baseline Program. Ces données ont été collectées entre 2018 et 2019 sur 7 sites autour de la baie de Placentia. Deux de ces sites ont fait l'objet d'un échantillonnage répété. Des échantillons d'eau de surface ont été collectés en collaboration avec des pêcheurs locaux, qui ont aidé l'équipe à remorquer un chalut de surface (le *Low-Tech Aquatic Debris Instrument*, ou ‘LADI’, une technologie de bricolage citoyenne développée par le *Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research*) équipé avec un filet à plancton pour le filtrage des eaux de surface pour les microplastiques. Water chemistry characteristics of two tributaries of Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, in 2019

Sipler, Rachel; Ziegler, Sue; Memorial University of Newfoundland — 2019-02-18 This dataset includes surface water characteristics such as: dissolved organic carbon, total dissolved nitrogen, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, urea, silica, dissolved iron, dissolved aluminum, CDOM spectral slope, chlorophyll, particulate carbon, nitrogen particulate, delta 13C. These analyzes follow the estuarine gradient of two tributaries of Placentia Bay in Newfoundland, Canada. Samples were collected monthly from February to October 2019. The objective of this work is to provide critical baseline data for the Placentia Bay region. This project was funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Coastal Environmental Baseline Program under the Oceans Protection Plan. Ce jeu de données comprend les caractéristiques des eaux de surface tels que : carbone organique dissous, azote dissous total, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, urée, silice, fer dissous, aluminium dissous, pente spectrale CDOM, chlorophylle, carbone particulaire, azote particulaire, delta 13C. Ces analyses suivent le gradient estuarien de deux affluents de la baie de Placentia à Terre-Neuve, au Canada. Des échantillons ont été prélevés tous les mois, de février à octobre 2019. L'objectif de ce travail est de fournir des données de base critiques pour la région de la baie de Placentia.
