Rentsch, K., Ana; Harlander, Alexandra; Niel, Lee; Siegford, Janice; Widowski, M. Tina 2023-04-06 We used two learning tests to test three hypotheses using chicks and pullets of brown and white layer strains reared in cages and aviaries of varying complexity. 1) Does increased spatial complexity during early life improve the performance of laying hen chicks/pullets in a T-maze? 2) Does chick/pullet performance in a two-dimensional learning task differ between genetic strains? 3) Is there an interactive effect of genetic strain and rearing environment on performance in the tasks?

Stellato, Anastasia C.; Jajou, Sarah; Dewey, Cate E.; Widowski, Tina M.; Niel, Lee 2019-10-04 Dogs were recruited with pre-existing veterinary fear to assess the efficacy of a 4-week counter-conditioning and desensitization training program on behavioural and physiological indicators of fear. For dogs that were randomized to receive training (n=15), their owners were instructed to perform exam-style handling on their dog and visit the veterinary clinic on a weekly basis for 4-weeks. For control dogs (n=22), owners were not given any instructions between testing. Dogs were assessed during arrival at the clinic entrance (entering clinic and weigh-in) and during a routine standardized examination before and training.

Rentsch, K., Ana; Harlander, Alexandra; Niel, Lee; Siegford, Janice; Widowski, M. Tina 2023-04-05 In this paper, we asked whether the degree of early complexity (minimal, low, moderate, or high), genetic strain (brown vs white feathered), or their interaction affects fear behaviour (type and intensity) in laying hen pullets in different fear-inducing situations: 1) a startle response test, 2) a novel arena, and 3) a novel object test.

Map search instructions

1.Turn on the map filter by clicking the “Limit by map area” toggle.
2.Move the map to display your area of interest. Holding the shift key and clicking to draw a box allows for zooming in on a specific area. Search results change as the map moves.
3.Access a record by clicking on an item in the search results or by clicking on a location pin and the linked record title.
Note: Clusters are intended to provide a visual preview of data location. Because there is a maximum of 50 records displayed on the map, they may not be a completely accurate reflection of the total number of search results.
