Sampling of the wells is conducted each January/February by Departmental staff. The samples are sent to a laboratory in New Brunswick for analysis. The purpose of the program is to monitor the environment for the presence of pesticide residues.

To create a long-term record of pesticide detections in drinking water, the same sites are sampled each year. Individual site locations are not listed to respect the privacy of the individuals involved, as this is a voluntary program for all participants. Public buildings (e.g., schools and seniors’ housing) are identified. The non-public building sites are listed as letter/number combinations (e.g. A1, AA, FFF, etc.) The designations remain consistent for each site from year to year.

The dataset also includes chemistry analyses for the sites. Additional water samples were collected at the same time as the pesticide sampling, which were then analyzed at the PEI Analytical Laboratory for various chemistry parameters. Users should note that the parameters analysed and the lab detection limits for these chemistry samples/results may vary from year to year. Chemistry sampling ceased after the 2013 sampling year.

Results with a "<" represent values below the lab's reporting limit. This dataset contains data collected in 2022. Monitoring results from earlier years can also be found on the Prince Edward Island open data portal.
This dataset includes raw data from 20 Island estuaries from across PEI; mapped locations of monitoring sites; and downloadable raw data. The data includes dissolved oxygen concentration, dissolved oxygen saturation, water temperature and instrument depth. Data is usually collected between May and October of each year. 18 estuaries are monitored on a 3 year rotating cycle with at least 6 of these 18 monitored in any given year. Another 2 estuaries are monitored every year. 2 locations are monitored in each estuary; the Upper Estuary location represents the upper 10% boundary of the estuary’s surface area, is closest to the freshwater inputs and should display signs of eutrophication if they are present; the Mid Estuary location represents the mid-point or 50% boundary of the surface area of the estuary. The Mid Estuary site may have two loggers, one placed about 0.5 m the bottom substrate and one placed about 0.5 m from the surface of the water. Data may be used to determine hourly fluctuations in oxygen, the degree of eutrophication, and the presence and duration of anoxia and hypoxia. Temperature and instrument depth (not the same as water depth at the site) data are also collected and available for use.
https://www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/information/finance/open-government-licence-prince-edward-island

Map search instructions

1.Turn on the map filter by clicking the “Limit by map area” toggle.
2.Move the map to display your area of interest. Holding the shift key and clicking to draw a box allows for zooming in on a specific area. Search results change as the map moves.
3.Access a record by clicking on an item in the search results or by clicking on a location pin and the linked record title.
Note: Clusters are intended to provide a visual preview of data location. Because there is a maximum of 50 records displayed on the map, they may not be a completely accurate reflection of the total number of search results.
