Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) Zone E delineates areas around a well where there is strong interaction between groundwater and surface water. The WHPA E shows the zone where surface water that comes from a stream or bay may impact or influence a well (groundwater). Pumping a well that is near a surface water body may cause water from the surface water source to be drawn into the well. Surface water typically flows more quickly than water in the ground. For this reason the time of travel for a WHPA E is measured in hours. The WHPA E is the zone in which a contaminant could travel, in two hours or less, from the surface water body to the well.
