Description:
Tree canopy cover is the branches, stems, and leaves of trees that cover the ground when viewed from above. Tree canopy cover is commonly used to evaluate the urban forest; it is relatively easy to measure and is a good indicator of the urban forest’s distribution. It enables a municipality to track how its urban forest changes over time, and also how it compares to other communities. Tree canopy cover does not address ecosystem services or forest characteristics, such as health or species distribution. The City aims to achieve a citywide tree canopy cover of 30% by 2038.
Please note the tree canopy cover estimates are based on available LiDAR data, accuracy of this data is influenced by the time of year the data is collected (i.e., early spring when deciduous trees don't have leaves).
