Statistics Canada — 2014-02-03 Immigrants to Canada generally have lower incomes than Canadian-born residents when they first arrive. Over time, they become more established and eventually catch up to their Canadian-born counterparts. In recent years, the time that it takes for immigrants to become established is taking longer, resulting in lower income as compared to Canadian-born residents. The median income of immigrants is a measure of the economic and social well-being of Surrey's immigrant population, and the City's aim is that it equals that of the total population over time. Unemployment Rates for Immigrants

Statistics Canada — 2014-02-03 Immigrants are more likely to be unemployed than Canadian-born residents, even though they are more likely to have post-secondary education. New immigrants face many job market constraints, including transferability of professional credentials, unfamiliarity with the job market, and lack of Canadian work experience. High unemployment among immigrants constitutes a significant under-utilization of labour, skills and talent that can benefit the economy. The City aims to see the unemployment rate no higher than that of the total population over time. Statistics Canada — 2014-02-03 Individuals with low income have inadequate resources for basic needs, maintaining a healthy standard of living, and enabling a sense of security and full participation in society. Low income and poverty are consistently linked to poorer health, more stress on family members, greater reliance on community and social services, and diminished school success. The rate of low income individuals is a measure of Surrey's overall social and economic well-being, and the City aims to see a downward trend over time. (Data Source: Statistics Canada.
