2022-02-05 Mass cytometry is an emerging powerful bioanalytical technique for high-dimensional single-cell analysis. In this technique, cells are stained with metal-isotope-tagged antibodies and are analyzed by an inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometer. While there are more than 100 stable isotopes available in the m/z 75 to 209 detection range of the instrument, only about 50 parameters can be measured per cell because current reagents are metal-chelating polymers with pendan aminocarboxylate chelators that only bind hard metal ions such as the rare earths and Bi3+. The data presented here describes the synthesis and characterization of a new type of metal-chelating polymer with pendant dipicolylamine chelators suited to binding intermediate to soft metals such as rhenium and platinum. We introduce two different conjugation strategies, a thiol-maleimide reaction that works well for rhenium, and a DBCO-azide click reaction designed to avoid potential complications of Pt and other heavy metals interacting with thiol groups. We show that these polymers can serve as new elemental mass tags for mass cytometry. Antibody-polymer conjugates of CD20 and CD8a prepared by both coupling reactions were employed in conjunction with commercial metal-conjugated antibodies for multi-parameter single-cell immunoassays.

2000-11-15
The Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA) was planned in 1989 as a national longitudinal study to provide accurate statistics on the number of people who have dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, in Canada. The study also covers a range of other health topics. The CSHA involved 10,263 people aged 65 or over, sampled from 36 communities across Canada. Representative samples were drawn from the community and from institutions, and participants were assessed at 5-yearly intervals: in 1991, 1996, and for a final time in 2001. The objectives initially focused on the epidemiology of dementia, and the study has provided estimates of prevalence, incidence and risk factors for dementia, and the burden it places on family caregivers. The CSHA has also described patterns of disability, frailty and healthy aging, and has recorded utilization of health services for different diagnostic groups.

2022-02-03
The Looking West survey evaluates the feeling of alienation of Western Canadians. It probes people in regards to their feelings towards the federation and whether they understand tensions that rule the country. After better understanding feelings of exclusion, surveyors questioned respondents on the level of respect their province receives federally, in regards to changes brought to the democratic institutions which could make them feel more included and on the effects of the equalization program. The survey was administered to 2412 Canadians. The provinces included in this survey are BC, Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Variables cover the following topics: demographics, politics, and the Government-Equalitzation Program.

2012-05-31 European Planning Studies provides a forum for ideas and information about spatial development processes and policies in Europe. The journal publishes articles of a theoretical, empirical and policy-relevant nature and is particularly concerned to integrate knowledge of processes with practical policy proposals, implementation and evaluation. Articles of particular interest to the journal focus upon specific spatial development problems, as well as emerging explanations of new urban, regional, national or supranational developmental tendencies. Country-specific, region-specific or locality-specific issues are focused upon, although comparative analysis is of especial value. Case studies of successful spatial policies and critiques of policy failure based on in-depth study are both welcomed. A key feature of the journal is to generalize learning about best practice analysis and policy-formulation in the field of spatial development planning. Additionally, European Planning Studies features articles which focus on the functional dimensions of planning, such as infrastructure, communications, environmental quality, design, cultural, social welfare, recreational, housing, industrial and employment concerns of planning at whatever spatial scale. Articles which are concerned with these questions in an appropriate spatial context, given the scope of the journal, are of special interest. The journal also carries European Briefing, Research Briefing and Book Reviews sections.

2022-02-28 Modular nanoconjugates present opportunities to explore the interactions of anisotropic nanoparticles (NPs) in biological environments. To promote colloidal stability and biocompatibility, most NPs designed for biomedical applications are coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) brushes. However, concerns have been raised about the immunogenicity of PEG, even though new evidence has suggested that differences in PEG architecture (i.e., branching) can change how NPs with surface-grafted PEGs interact with different biological environments. In particular, poly(oligoethyleneglycol methacrylate) (POEGMA) has been shown to have useful antifouling properties without triggering PEG-associated immunogenicity. Nevertheless, these observations have not resulted in useful relationships between PEG structure and its biological activity, as there have been few direct comparisons of these polymers in biological systems. The following data compares the penetration of three rod-like NPs with narrow size distributions (Ln = 170 nm, wn = 12 nm) using tumor spheroids as a model.

2022-01-28 Project #: 877019
A study which examined the causes, manifestations, and prevention of the student dropout problem in Ontario's secondary schools. The major part of the study consists of a telephone survey. The survey covered: a profile of the dropout, presents a demographic profile; ethnic and language data; perspectives on the dropout's family background; perspectives on the family's influence; and goals, aspirations, and value orientations. Additional interviews with teachers, parents, and employees focused on the dropout and the school system, including school subjects; academic and performance evaluations of dropouts and graduates; school history; grade levels; early identification; program divisions; and attitudes about the school system. Drop-outs were also interviewed on the issue of dropping out, looking at the year and grade of the dropout; the decision to leave school; reasons for leaving; teacher views; and the future after dropping out. The survey also examined the student who drops back into school after dropping out. Additional questions consider ways to keep potential dropouts in school and looks at dropouts' own suggestions for changing the system.
