2022-05-06
Wildlife Key Areas (WKA) are locations used by wildlife for critical, seasonal life functions. WKAs are identified by interpreting observed locations of wildlife at key times of year, not through intensive habitat assessment. Polygons derived from interviews with locals and from GIS interpretation of wildlife/habitat surveys. GIS interpretation follows criteria specific for taxon and/or populations of taxon. Key Areas are based on observed locations of wildlife at key times of year, not on habitat assessment. With new information, boundaries and designations of Key Areas can change and additional Key Areas can be identified. Furthermore, Key Areas are not the only sites important for wildlife. Other information sources can identify other sites important for wildlife for reasons outside the scope of the WKA Inventory Program. Updates to Key Areas occur only periodically. For the most current information, please consult with the Regional Biologist for your area of interest. If you have questions or would like to contribute to the WKA database, please contact the WKA Inventory Program ( wka@yukon.ca ).

Distributed from GeoYukon by the Government of Yukon . 2022-05-06
The parcel addressing system was created as a response to requests from unincorporated rural Yukon property owners. The intent was to locate rural property owners in the event of an emergency, specifically around ambulance, fire, and RCMP emergency concerns. Parcel address data is a physical address of a number, street name, street type, and community. It is distinct from the legal address (lot, block, plan) and the mailing address. Eight municipalities (Carcross, Carmacks, Dawson, Haines Junction, Mayo, Teslin, Watson Lake and Whitehorse) provided address information into the database; address information from unincorporated rural Yukon was created by Yukon Government, Community Services. Polygons are tied to cadastral fabric where possible. Parcel address information is managed by Yukon Government, Land Planning branch. The Parcel address spatial layer is updated as necessary.

Distributed from GeoYukon by the Government of Yukon . 2022-05-06
The Yukon Territory is underlain by a great variety of rock types ranging in age from Early Proterozoic to Recent and representing diverse environments including epicratonic basins, subsiding shelves, foreland basins, island arcs and deep ocean basins. Episodes of compressional and extensional deformation, transcurrent faulting, metamorphism and plutonism further complicate the map pattern. This complex geological record has been described in terms of the interactions of several terranes (large parts of the earth's crust which preserve a common geological record) with each other and with the margin of ancestral North America.

Distributed from GeoYukon by the Government of Yukon . 2022-05-06
Major hard rock mining project in Yukon requires a detailed environmental and socio-economic assessment and various regulatory approvals. These approvals include, but are not limited to a Water Licence and a Quartz Mining Licence.

A project must go through two distinct stages before mining activity can commence. First, an assessment determines whether significant adverse environmental or socio-economic effects are likely to occur. Second, a regulatory licensing approval process needs to take place.

This data represents the location of Quartz Mining Licence in Yukon.

Distributed from GeoYukon by the Government of Yukon . 2022-05-06
Landscape hazard maps were completed as part of a community hazards mapping program coordinated by the Northern Climate ExChange (Yukon Research Centre, Yukon College). Potential landscape hazards were assessed under changing future conditions by incorporating a variety of data sets, including surficial geology, topography (slope and aspect), permafrost distribution, site-specific permafrost data (e.g. ground penetrating radar, electrical resistivity tomography and borehole data), analyses of past hydrological and climatological trends, and future climate projections. The landscape hazard map identifies existing and potential geological hazards such as landslides, permafrost stability and flooding. The hazard map is presented in stoplight colours to provide an intuitive tool for community decision makers aiming to incorporate an adaptation planning framework into existing land use management practices. Detailed descriptions of data inputs and hazard analysis methodology are presented in an accompanying report (available for download from https://data.geology.gov.yk.ca/Reference/68410 ).
