Environment and Climate Change 2023-01-23 The Regenerating Stand Inventory (RSI) is a spatial dataset containing information on the status of selected previously disturbed stands (i.e. cutblocks or burn sites) in a form of modified forest inventory data. In addition to standard inventory attributes the dataset contains such attributes as stocking and stems per hectare which provide information on the extent of the assessed area that is occupied by trees. In addition, the data contains information on site moisture regime and stand level data such as tree height and species composition for both over-story and under-story layers. The RSI data was collected aerially either by air calls during a helicopter survey or by interpreting aerial photos taken by a fixed wing aircraft. RSI data is used in forest management to better understand natural forest renewal in disturbed areas and to identify slow regenerating areas that could benefit from artificial regeneration. https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/open-government-licence-northwest-territories

Environment and Climate Change 1900-01-01 An update to the land cover over Phase 1 of the Northwest Territories study area was undertaken using Landsat TM imagery collected from 2006 to 2008 (c.2007); the Phase 2 and Phase 3 area consisted of Landsat TM imagery collected from 2007 to 2013 (c.2010). The image classification procedure followed the methods of Earth Observation of Sustainable Development of Forests (EOSD), which employs unsupervised classifications and cluster labeling techniques to classify twenty-four land cover classes. The main objectives for updating the land cover were: i) to replace the original circa 2000 EOSD land cover with an EOSD product more current to the natural disturbances of the landscape (ex., fire and forest regeneration), and ii) to improve upon some of the issues in creating the original land cover data (e.g., NoData, seamlines, misclassifications). https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/open-government-licence-northwest-territories

Environment and Climate Change 2023-01-23 The goal of the wolf management program is to sufficiently reduce wolf predation on the Bathurst and Bluenose-East caribou herds to allow for an increase in calf and adult caribou survival rates to contribute to the stabilization and recovery of both herds. This is a five-year program which includes support for wolf harvesters and the traditional economy to increase annual ground-based harvest of wolves in winter, combined with a research, monitoring and assessment program. https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/open-government-licence-northwest-territories

Environment and Climate Change 1900-01-01 The NWT-wide Community-based Water Quality Monitoring Program started in 2012 and was designed to contribute to the NWT Water Stewardship Strategy in three ways: · Provide opportunities for local monitors to do water sampling activities · Collect water quality information for a baseline data set · Help address community concerns about the health of the water The program involves community members from 21 different communities in the NWT, ENR staff and other water partners. The goal of the monitoring program is to include NWT residents in water quality water monitoring at sites across the NWT to answer community questions about water quality. https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/open-government-licence-northwest-territories

Environment and Climate Change
Environment and Climate Change 1900-01-01 The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) is responsible for monitoring transboundary waters to ensure that upstream provinces and territories are not causing downstream effects in the Northwest Territories (NWT). Monitoring currently takes place on the Slave, Hay, Liard and Peel rivers. The comprehensive program has developed a solid baseline for the aquatic ecosystem of these rivers against which future changes can be measured. The program allows for the detection/early warning of negative environmental trends in waters downstream of industrial developments and is responsive to unexpected upstream events. Status and trend reports are currently available for the Slave and Hay rivers, and are currently being developed for the Peel and Liard rivers. Open water seasonal sampling at these four transboundary sites continues in 2014. Partners in the network include Environment and Climate Change Canada and First Nations (Smith Landing, K’atl’odeeche, Gwich'in, Liard, Northern Alberta). https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/open-government-licence-northwest-territories
