Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) / Environnement et Changement climatique Canada (ECCC) 2021-07-12 Water quality monitoring in the connecting channels of the Great Lakes is part of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s commitment to the Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) under the auspices of the International Joint Commission (IJC, 1989) to evaluate the effectiveness of pollution control programs carried out in the Great Lakes Basin. Water quality monitoring in the Connecting Channels began with the establishment of a fixed sampling site on the Niagara River at Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) in 1975 and, over the next decade, additional sites were added on the St. Lawrence River at Wolfe Island in 1976 and upstream on the Niagara River at Fort Erie (FE) in 1983. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) / Environnement et Changement climatique Canada (ECCC) 2021-08-06 Areas of Concern (AOCs) are geographic areas within the Great Lakes basin, identified in the mid-1980s, where significant impairment of beneficial uses of the environment has occurred resulting from localized human activities. Water quality and ecosystem health monitoring and surveillance is conducted to assess ecosystem impairment in Areas of Concern (AOCs) and to track the effectiveness of remedial actions aimed at restoring beneficial uses. Remediating AOCs contributes to the sustainability of local communities and of the Great Lakes region, and is a joint commitment under the Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA). This dataset contains data collected by the Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance Division of Environment and Climate Change Canada used in these assessments.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) / Environnement et Changement climatique Canada (ECCC) 2021-07-15 Water quality monitoring data is collected in priority tributaries as part of binational efforts under Aneex 4 of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) to estimate nutrient loading to the waters of the Great Lakes. At present, the focus is primarily tributaries of Lake Erie, the smallest, shallowest of the Great Lakes, and most susceptible to algal blooms. Tributaries may be added or removed from active monitoring dependent upon recommendation of binational working groups under the GLWQA. These data are used to track and report on progress towards meeting nutrient loading targets established for Lake Erie. The data also contribute to our understanding of the factors that affect tributary and nearshore and offshore water quality, algae growth and overall ecosystem health. https://open.canada.ca/en/open-government-licence-canada.
