Health Canada; Environics Research Group 2023-09-14 Environics Research Group Limited was retained by Health Canada to survey the general public, including non-smokers and smokers, in the provinces of Quebec, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, on attitudes toward second-hand smoke and smoking in public places. The surveys were designed to sample 800 of the general population in each province, plus an oversample of smokers to bring the total to 800 smokers in each province. Environics conducted interviews by telephone as follows: 1,404 adults, including 800 smokers, in Quebec, December 9 to 28, 2004; 1,443 adults, including 801 smokers, in Ontario, December 7 to 23, 2004; and 1,413 adults, including 802 smokers, in Saskatchewan, December 7 to 22, 2004. The margin of error for samples of this size is plus or minus 2.6 percentage points, 19 times in 20. The survey was conducted to measure knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of the population, both smokers and non-smokers, to serve as a baseline against which to measure and evaluate the impact of the smoking ban which came into effect in Saskatchewan on January 1, 2005, as well as any bans which may result from recent proposals announced in Ontario and Quebec.
