Statistics Canada 2015-01-01 The Labour Force Survey provides estimates of employment and unemployment which are among the most timely and important measures of performance of the Canadian economy. With the release of the survey results only 10 days after the completion of data collection, the LFS estimates are the first of the major monthly economic data series to be released. The Canadian Labour Force Survey was developed following the Second World War to satisfy a need for reliable and timely data on the labour market. Information was urgently required on the massive labour market changes involved in the transition from a war to a peace-time economy. The main objective of the LFS is to divide the working-age population into three mutually exclusive classifications - employed, unemployed, and not in the labour force - and to provide descriptive and explanatory data on each of these. LFS data are used to produce the well-known unemployment rate as well as other standard labour market indicators such as the employment rate and the participation rate. The LFS also provides employment estimates by industry, occupation, public and private sector, hours worked and much more, all cross-classifiable by a variety of demographic characteristics. Estimates are produced for Canada, the provinces, the territories and a large number of sub-provincial regions. For employees, wage rates, union status, job permanency and workplace size are also produced.

Statistics Canada 2009-11-18 <p>The Road Network Files (RNFs) are disseminated to provide geographic reference information for the 2001 Census data. They can be used to reference the boundaries of the geographic areas by which Census data are tabulated or to request retrievals of census data by user defined geographic areas.</p> <p>Road Network Files contain a road layer for the entire country and a province/territory boundary layer. The road layer includes roads, with road names and address ranges (arc attributes), and geographic codes to identify <strong>blocks, census subdivisions, census metropolitan areas/census agglomerations,</strong> and provinces/territories (polygon attributes). Address ranges are mainly available in the large urban centres of Canada. The province/territory boundary layer incorporates hydrography (the shoreline around Canada and the inland lakes and waterways) with the boundaries and the geographic codes.</p> <p>Roads in the Road Network Files are ranked at five levels of detail. This allows the users to select different subsets of roads for mapping purposes. Road Network Files provide full digital coverage for Canada. There are 60 standard Road Network Files:</p> <ul> <li>Canada</li> <li>10 Provinces and 3 territories</li> <li>27 census metropolitan areas</li> <li>19 census agglomerations with <strong>census tracts</strong></li> </ul> <h3>Note on new file formats</h3> <h4>April 2018</h4> <p>The original files for this census were the Esri .e00 interchange format files and the Mapinfo format files.</p> <p>Shapefile and geojson format files suitable for use with newer technology were created using GDAL: <a href="http://www.gdal.org/">http://www.gdal.org/</a></p> <p>Specifically, files were converted from Mapinfo: <code style="font-family: &quot;Source Code Pro&quot;;">ogr2ogr -f {fileformat} [options] {output file} {input file}</code></p> <p>Note that some lengthy field names may be truncated.</p> <p><em>If you wish to use the original files provided by Statistics Canada, please use either .e00 format or Mapinfo format.</em></p>

Statistics Canada 2009-11-19 <p>The Street Network Files (SNFs), formerly known as the Area Master Files (AMFs), were first created in the early 1970s as the basis for retrieval of Census data for user-defined geographic areas. More recently, the Street Network Files have also been used in Census data collection, specifically in the delineation of enumeration areas and the automated production of census collection and reference maps.</p> <p>The Street Network Files contain information on visible features such as streets, hydrography, railroad tracks and power lines, and information on invisible (or abstract) features such as municipal and park boundaries. The files also contain attribute information on the features (for example, street and hydrographic names and address ranges for streets with assigned addresses).</p> <p>The 1996 Street Network Files (SNFs) are available as standard products for 50 urban centres:</p> <ul> <li>25 census metropolitan areas (CMAs),</li> <li>18 census agglomerations (CAs), and</li> <li>Seven census subdivisions (CSDs) outside CMA/CA areas.</li> </ul> <p>Street Network Files provide full digital coverage for 23 urban centres and partial coverage for 27. In total, 344 census subdivisions are covered by a Street Network File. These CSDs represent a population of approximately 18 million people or 62% of the total population of Canada. A comprehensive list of CMA/CAs and their component census subdivisions covered by a Street Network File is presented in Appendix D.</p> <p>The 1996 Street Network Files contain street information and address ranges current to Census Day, May 14, 1996.</p> <h3>Note on new file formats</h3> <h4>January 2018</h4> <p>The original files for this census were the Esri .e00 interchange format files and the Mapinfo format files.</p> <p>Shapefile and geojson format files suitable for use with newer technology were created using GDAL: <a href="http://www.gdal.org/">http://www.gdal.org/</a></p> <p>Specifically, files were converted from Mapinfo: <code style="font-family: &quot;Source Code Pro&quot;;">ogr2ogr -f {fileformat} [options] {output file} {input file}</code></p> <p>Note that some lengthy field names may be truncated.</p> <p><em>If you wish to use the original files provided by Statistics Canada, please use either .e00 format or Mapinfo format.</em></p>

Statistics Canada 2019-11-19 <p>The main purpose of this survey is to study the coverage of the employment insurance program. It provides a meaningful picture of who does or does not have access to EI benefits among the jobless and those in a situation of underemployment. The Employment Insurance Coverage Survey also covers access to maternity and parental benefits.</p> <p>The survey was designed to produce a series of precise measures to identify groups with low probability of receiving benefits, for instance, the long-term jobless, labour market entrants and students, people becoming unemployed after uninsured employment, people who have left jobs voluntarily and individuals who are eligible, given their employment history, but do not claim or otherwise receive benefits. The survey provides a detailed description of the characteristics of the last job held as well as reasons for not receiving benefits or for not claiming.</p> <p>Through the survey data, analysts will also be able to observe the characteristics and situation of people not covered by EI and of those who exhausted EI benefits, the job search intensity of the unemployed, expectation of recall to a job, and alternate sources of income and funds.</p> <p>Survey data pertaining to maternity and parental benefits answer questions on the proportion of mothers of an infant who received maternity and parental benefits, the reason why some mothers do not receive benefits and about sharing parental benefits with their spouse. The survey also allows looking at the timing and circumstances related to the return to work, the income adequacy of households with young children and more.</p>

Statistics Canada 2010-05-05 This issue describes in detail the health region limits as of December 2007 and their correspondence with the 2006 and 2001 Census geography. Health regions are defined by the provinces and represent administrative areas or regions of interest to health authorities. This product contains correspondence files (linking health regions to census geographic codes) and digital boundary files. User documentation provides an overview of health regions, sources, methods, limitations and product description (file format and layout). In addition to the geographic files, this product also includes 2006 Census data (basic profile) for health regions. The health region boundaries provided in this product are based on 2006 and 2001 Census geographic units. The smallest geographic unit available has been used as the building block to define health regions. In all provinces except Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the dissemination area was used to define health regions. In the western provinces, the DA is not ideal and would create additional distortion. Therefore, the dissemination block has been used to improve the accuracy of these boundaries. Even with this improved resolution, the boundary files do not always reflect the true, legal limits recognized by the provinces. For the most part, they are based on a best-fit linkage to census geography. To maximize comparability, the provincial ministries of health shared their census linkage files where applicable.

Statistics Canada 2011-03-18 The Inter-corporate ownership CD is the most authoritative and comprehensive source of information available on corporate ownership; a unique directory of "who owns what" in Canada. It provides up-to-date information reflecting recent corporate takeovers and other substantial changes. Ultimate corporate control is determined through a careful study of holdings by corporations, the effects of options, insider holdings, convertible shares and interlocking directorships. The number of corporations that make up the hierarchy of structures totals approximately 40,000. The information that is presented is based on non-confidential returns filed by Canadian corporations under the Corporations Returns Act and on research using public sources such as internet sites. The data are presented in an easy-to-read tiered format, illustrating at a glance the hierarchy of subsidiaries within each corporate structure. The entries for each corporation provide both the country of control and the country of residence. The product covers every individual corporation that is part of a group of commonly controlled corporations with combined assets exceeding 200 million dollars or combined revenue exceeding 80 million dollars. Individual corporations with debt obligations or equity owing to non-residents exceeding a net book value of 1 million dollars are covered as well.
