Large protected areas, such as Waterton Lakes National Park, provide important habitat for a wide range of bird species. Data collected can provide a number of ecological indices; for example, used to assess the effects of land use and climate change. Yearly data are collected at these sites using audio recorders to determine indices of bird diversity and occupancy trends to inform management. — 2010-08-27 Human biomonitoring is used to estimate exposure to environmental chemicals by measuring the chemical, its metabolites, or reaction products in biological specimens. Since 2007, the biomonitoring component of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) has measured over 250 chemicals in blood, urine and/or pooled serum. The CHMS is an ongoing national survey with data collected in two-year cycles. More information on the full survey can be found on the Statistics Canada website (statcan.gc.ca/chms). Specific to the biomonitoring component, general information on the survey design, fieldwork, laboratory and statistical analyses, and considerations for data interpretation can be found in the reports on Human Biomonitoring of Environmental Chemicals in Canada (canada.ca/biomonitoring). Biomonitoring data are presented for each chemical summarized by biological matrix, cycle, sex and age group. Anticipating the Effect of Climate Change on Contaminant Exposure in the Arctic

— 2015-03-20 This project provided matching funds for the participation of a Canadian researcher in a European research project on the effect of climate change on the contaminant exposure and resulting health effects in Arctic human populations. In particular, the research used conceptual and numerical models to predict how and to what extent the exposure of human and wildlife populations in the North are likely to change as a result of the rapidly changing Arctic climate. The models and the results of simulations using these models facilitate the interpretation of time trends of contamination in air, wildlife and humans, by identifying and quantifying the confounding influence of climate change on those time trends.

2010 Active Layer Detachment (ALD) Carbon Exchange, Cape Bounty

— 2011-08-30 Carbon exchange was monitored from two sites within four ALDs. Carbon exchange was monitored using a two-step process involving static Plexiglas chambers and infrared gas analyzers. Initial uncovered readings were taken, recording CO2 concentrations in ppm, every 5 seconds for a total of 5 minutes to obtain net ecosystem productivity (NEP). A second covered reading was taken for the same period of time to obtain ecosystem respiration (R). Covered readings were subtracted from uncovered readings to obtain gross ecosystem productivity (GEP). &#x0d; CO2 concentrations were measured using a Vaisala CARBOCAP GMP343 probe and recorded onto a hand-held device. Temperature and relative humidity were simultaneously recorded by a second Vaisala HUMICAP HM70 probe (VAISALA Corp., Vantaa, Finland). Carbon exchange was monitored every 5 to 6 days beginning on June 26th and ending August 8th. Collected CO2 concentration data has been modified from ppm and expressed as a flux (ugC/m2/min). &#x0d; Concurrent to each CO2 measurement, air pressure, air temperature, wind speed were monitored using a Kestrel 3500. Soil temperature, soil moisture and active layer depth were also measured. Soil temperature was recorded at a depth of 10cm using a Taylor model 9878 digital thermometer (Taylor Thermometer, Oak Brook, Illinois, USA). Soil moisture was measured to a depth of 10cm using a Delta-T ML2X ThetaProbe. Active layer was measured using steel probe marked with 10cm increments.

Yukon Contaminants Database: Long-term Monitoring of Contaminant Levels in Yukon Wildlife (1988-2009)

— 2019-08-07 For many years levels of contaminants were monitored in fishes, birds, mammals and plants of Yukon. A range of metals and organochlorines, including arsenic, cadmium, mercury, POPs, DDT, and PCBs, were measured in samples from Yukon wildlife. Measurements were done on samples of liver, kidneys, bones, muscles, eggs, fat, feathers, etc. of various animals. Berries, flowers, cones, foliage, etc. were sampled for the plants analysis. &#x0d; In this dataset, contaminants analysis on mammals (except for caribou), birds, fishes and plants are presented. For the caribou dataset, please refer to metadata No. 12436.&#x0d; For more specific information on associated projects which are partly contributing data to this database, please refer to metadata No. 9896, 11051, 12007 (caribou) and 11703 (fish).
