2013-11-04 Understanding the state and trends in agriculture production is essential to combat both short-term and long-term threats to stable and reliable access to food for all, and to ensure a profitable agricultural sector. Starting in 2009, the Earth Observation Team of the Science and Technology Branch (STB) at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) began the process of generating annual crop type digital maps. Focusing on the Prairie Provinces in 2009 and 2010, a Decision Tree (DT) based methodology was applied using optical (Landsat-5, AWiFS, DMC) and radar (Radarsat-2) based satellite images. Beginning with the 2011 growing season, this activity has been extended to other provinces in support of a national crop inventory. To date this approach can consistently deliver a crop inventory that meets the overall target accuracy of at least 85% at a final spatial resolution of 30m (56m in 2009 and 2010).

2020-01-17
Many populations of freshwater fishes are threatened with losses, and increasingly, the release of hatchery individuals is one strategy being implemented to support wild populations. However, stocking of hatchery individuals may pose long-term threats to wild populations, particularly if genetic interactions occur between wild and hatchery individuals. One highly prized sport fish that has been heavily stocked throughout its range is the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). In Nova Scotia, Canada, hatchery brook trout have been stocked since the early 1900s, and despite continued stocking efforts, populations have suffered declines in recent decades. Before this study, the genetic structure of brook trout populations in the province was unknown; however, given the potential negative consequences associated with hatchery stocking, it is possible that hatchery programs have adversely affected the genetic integrity of wild populations. To assess the influence of hatchery supplementation on wild populations, we genotyped wild brook trout from 12 river systems and hatchery brook trout from two major hatcheries using 100 microsatellite loci. Genetic analyses of wild trout revealed extensive population genetic structure among and within river systems and significant isolation-by-distance. Hatchery stocks were genetically distinct from wild populations, and most populations showed limited to no evidence of hatchery introgression (<5% hatchery ancestry). Only a single location had a substantial number of hatchery-derived trout and was located in the only river where a local strain is used for supplementation. The amount of hatchery stocking within a watershed did not influence the level of hatchery introgression. Neutral genetic structure of wild populations was influenced by geography with some influence of climate and stocking indices. Overall, our study suggests that long-term stocking has not significantly affected the genetic integrity of wild trout populations, highlighting the variable outcomes of stocking and the need to evaluate the consequences on a case-by-case basis
https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/

2017-05-05 The Blended Index (BI) is a model which employs multiple potential indicators of drought and excess moisture, such as the Palmer drought index, rolling precipitation amounts and soil moisture, and combines them into a weighted, normalized value between 0 and 100. The inputs and weights used in this model are subject to change periodically as it is optimized to best represent extent, duration and severity of impactful weather conditions. The blended index is deployed as two variations; short term (st) focusing on 1 to 3 months, and long term (lt) focusing on 6 months to 5 years.

2019-12-12 This data was collected as part of The City of Calgary's two-year shared electric scooter and dockless bike share pilots. The trips in this dataset occurred between July 1st, 2019 and September 30th, 2019. Excluded from this dataset are trips that lasted fewer than 30 seconds or 100 metres, and trips where the geospatial data quality made it unsuitable for analysis. Trip start times have been generalized to 1-hour intervals. Trip origins and destinations have been generalized by tiling the city with hexagonal bins measuring 30,000 square metres each. The latitude and longitude coordinates are the centrepoint of the corresponding bin.

2022-01-20 This chart shows weight per cent composition grouped by material category. This dataset is for garbage bin waste from the Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) sector. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is used to categorize ICI businesses and organizations into sub-sectors for ease of data collection and reporting. The NAICS sub-sectors included in this study are: Accommodation and Food Services (NAICS code 72), Retail Trade (44-45), Manufacturing (31-33), Health Care and Social Assistance (62), and Public Administration (91). All businesses and organizations included in the study were customers of The City’s Commercial Collections service, except for one privately-serviced customer in the Accommodation and Food Services sub-sector that was added to provide better sector representation. A total of 115 samples are included in the dataset: 30 in Accommodation and Food Services, 35 in Retail Trade, 17 in Manufacturing, 25 in Health Care and Social Assistance, and 8 in Public Administration. The weight per cent for each sub-sector is the pooled average of samples collected in the four seasons of 2019. Waste Composition studies are periodically conducted by Waste and Recycling Services to help assess the performance of diversion and education programs and inform improvements and new program design. https://data.calgary.ca/d/Open-Data-Terms/u45n-7awa
