The Consumer Price Index (CPI) represents changes in prices as experienced by Canadian consumers. It measures price change by comparing, through time, the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services. Since the basket contains goods and services of unchanging or equivalent quantity and quality, the index reflects only pure price change.
The CPI is widely used as an indicator of the change in the general level of consumer prices or the rate of inflation. Since the purchasing power of money is affected by changes in prices, the CPI is useful to all Canadians. Consumers can compare movements in the CPI to changes in their personal income to monitor and evaluate changes in their financial situation. L'Indice des prix à la consommation (IPC) représente les changements de prix que subissent les consommateurs canadiens. Il mesure la variation des prix en comparant, au fil du temps, le coût d'un panier fixe de biens et de services. Puisque le panier comprend des biens et services d'une quantité et d'une qualité constante ou équivalente, l'indice reflète uniquement la fluctuation pure des prix.
L'IPC est couramment utilisé comme indicateur de la variation du niveau général des prix à la consommation ou du taux d'inflation. Comme la variation des prix a un effet sur le pouvoir d'achat du dollar, l'IPC est utile pour tous les Canadiens. Les consommateurs peuvent comparer la fluctuation de l'IPC à la variation de leur revenu personnel et ainsi suivre et évaluer l'évolution de leur situation financière.
